The first ever round of SPL fixtures took place on the weekend of August 1 & 2, 1998. Eoin Jess of Aberdeen had the distinction of scoring the first SPL goal and there was an opening-day hat-trick for Celtic's Craig Burley.

Celtic 5-0 Dunfermline
Craig Burley hit a hat-trick for Jo Venglos' side, with Simon Donnelly and Malky Mackay also on target for the reigning champions.
Dundee 0-2 Aberdeen
Eoin Jess scored the landmark first SPL goal after 21 minutes at Dens Park and Craig Hignett made sure of victory.
Kilmarnock 2-0 Dundee Utd
Paul Wright and Pat Nevin netted the goals as Bobby Williamson's team made a winning start in a season when they went on to finish fourth.
Motherwell 1-0 St Johnstone
The Steelmen claimed an opening day success against their Perth visitors thanks to a 49th-minute effort from Jered Stirling at Fir Park.

Hearts 2-1 Rangers
Early strikes from Stephane Adam and Jim Hamilton secured victory for the Scottish Cup holders. Rod Wallace reduced the deficit but Dick Advocaat's first game in charge of the Ibrox club ended in defeat at Tynecastle.
