SPL Celebrity Fan interview
Barrhead-raised author and St Mirren supporter Christopher Brookmyre is the first to feature in the SPL Celebrity Fan interview...
What are your memories of your first game at Love Street?
My dad took me to the old Main Stand early in the 76-77 season under Alex Ferguson and I grew up watching St Mirren during the 80s.
Best game?
It was October 1983, we were on a good run, having beaten Rangers 3-0. We then played Celtic but were 2-0 down after 20 minutes but St Mirren went on to win 3-2. There was a drunken Celtic fan taunting the home fans, but when St Mirren took the lead, a pie was thrown at him!
Did you attend the last match at Love Street?
Yes I did. Any time I drive to airport, I miss the ground not being there.
Are you worried about a jinx at St Mirren Park?
It was a worry at the start, especially after the painful Aberdeen game at St Mirren Park, when there was a 94th min equaliser for the Dons.
How is the atmosphere in the new ground?
Quieter, because fans are more spread out now. It will take a wee while for it to grow.
Who do you go to the games with?
I go to the football with my pals. I can’t get my son to come to football because he’s still too sensitive, he doesn’t like it in movies when the bad guys are on top!
What do you think of the side this season?
I think the squad is balanced. I thought the likes of Stephen McGinn at the start of the season would become a standout.
What are your aspirations for the club?
It would be nice to feel they weren’t on a knife edge like last few seasons in relegation zone. Top six is perhaps beyond them but it would be good to see the team play under less pressure.
