Top Signings - This Season So Far...
With the January transfer window closing at 11pm tomorrow night (Thursday the 31st), we take a look at some of the summer’s signings who have been outstanding purchases in this season’s Clydesdale Bank Premier League.
Niall McGinn – Celtic to Aberdeen
Signed as a free agent in the summer following a season on loan to Brentford (from Celtic) McGinn has had an excellent season so far for both club and country. The Dons’ number ten has struck 14 goals this season and only Inverness’ Billy McKay, Leigh Griffiths of Hibernian and Motherwell’s Michael Higdon are ahead of him in the scoring charts. McGinn also scored in Northern Ireland’s fantastic 1-1 draw away to Portugal in October.
Efe Ambrose – FC Ashdod to Celtic
Another example of Celtic’s excellent scouting policy all over the world, few would have known of Efe Ambrose when he was signed from Israeli side FC Ashdod. The Nigerian international has been played right-back, centre half and centre midfield this season for the Hoops, and has become a vital component of Neil Lennon’s side.
Paul Cairney – Partick Thistle to Hibernian
Cairney made the move to Leith after three seasons with Partick Thistle in the First Division. Thistle’s Player of the Year from last season scored a classy goal for the Hibees at Celtic Park in September and has since been an integral part of their midfield.
And from the January window...
Ivan Sproule – Hibernian to Ross County
The Northern Irishman returned to the Hibees in 2011 after leaving Easter Road for Bristol City in 2007. After eighteen months back in Edinburgh, Sproule signed for newly-promoted Ross County in the January transfer window, and made an instinct impact by scoring twice in the 4-1 victory away at St Mirren. His debut suggests that he could be a promising acquisition for Derek Adams.
