SPL Trust History

SPL Trust History

Football clubs are no longer just about 90 minutes on a Saturday and closing their doors for the rest of the week. They recognise the importance of working with the local area, appreciating that they and their players are the focal points of communities, and the responsibilities that come with this. Work is now going on not just during the season or in school term time. It is taking place throughout the week, at weekends and all year round.

The clubs have a vested interest in, and responsibility to, their local community. A thriving community engaged with its local football club benefits everyone – community activities can help to foster a bond between the club and individuals which lasts a lifetime.

In light of this, the SPL Trust was formed in 2009 as the charitable arm of the SPL.

In January 2011, the SPL commissioned its first community report. Here are some headline figures:

• 182 community projects currently in operation
• 23,660 people take part in SPL club projects each week
• 6,600 hours spent on community activity each week
• £8million invested by SPL clubs on community activity each year
• £4.5million outside investment leveraged in for community activity each year

The SPL Trust is a registered charity (SC041121) and is focused on co-ordinating and developing community benefit activities at all SPL clubs across Scotland. It will work to develop partnerships with other key agencies such as UK and Scottish Government, local councils and other public and private interests which will help deliver benefits to the communities that surround and sustain each club.
